Recovery Notes

Guilt, Shame, and Grace | August 1, 2026

Last week in our Thursday night Addiction Recovery Group for women, we explored how changing our negative thinking patterns can change our paradigm—the way we see the world and our place in it—and how vital that process is to recovery.

This Thursday, August 6, we'll continue that discussion by looking more closely at guilt and shame, two of recovery's greatest enemies.

By definition, guilt and shame are current feelings about something in the past—whether that past was years ago or yesterday.

Often, they are rooted in the things we have not yet forgiven ourselves for, even though our sincere and ongoing efforts to change—our repentance—have already been laid before the Savior through His merciful sacrifice.

So what is the truth?

Do we truly understand that the Atonement is a real, living, breathing power? Or are we continuing to suffer because we refuse to extend to ourselves the same grace Christ is offering us this very minute?

We often hear that we receive grace by giving grace.

Perhaps our grace-giving should also begin within our own woman's heart.

I look forward to our discussion on Thursday evening.
